A while back a developer named Ken Wheeler that I used to follow when I had a Twitter said something interesting. He said, "We're entering the age of the idea guy". I think he actually said this in like 2023 if I'm not mistaken, which I give him a lot of credit, I feel like he's a bit of a visionary for saying that back then. Because in those days the jury was still out on GPT, even if things were heading in a promising direction.
Now? Forget it. He was right. In fact, this whole fucking site was vibe coded - and I'm not just saving markdowns to some folder to write these. I built a full on blog editor with markdown support. On top of that, I was still able to secure it, optimize it and I'm adding new features daily like it's going out of style. I think in the entire time I've been creating websites I've deployed a single working site (the year 2000 - RIP time-design.net!!).
As someone that is employed as a software engineer, I think it's interesting the 180 I've taken on this whole subject. At first I was naturally freaked out. I figured if AI was this effective, certainly my job was done for. I assumed that Product Owners could simply prompt the AI and get what they wanted sans me. They can, but I'm seeing that in spite of that, their jobs are still important and needed SEPARATELY from pure development work. There is still a level of complexity where I work that requires the separation of concerns.
Now am I still worried that I can get axed to "budget for more investment into AI"? Sure! But you know what? I feel lethal with this new power. Like I finally feel like so many of the things I've wanted to create are within my reach at a MUCH faster rate. I AM an idea guy - I always have been. It's what attracted me to software development to begin with. In '95 I wanted to make a punter to kick people off AOL. In '99 I wanted to write an exploit in C to backdoor into a FreeBSD box. In '12 I wanted a booking system for my limo business. For me it's never been about the coding itself - its always been about creativity. Coding was fun and I feel like it exercised my brain in a way that I needed, but the way I've been able to create cool stuff lately, I can't help but be excited for this new age of computing!!
